The number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s continues to increase rapidly. Alzheimer’s disease affects about 6.5 million Americans, about 4.7 million of which are 75 and older. Anyone can be diagnosed – a grandparent, cousin, sibling, or even your parent. Eventually, those with Alzheimer’s require round-the-clock care. For many families, this means bringing the loved one into their own home.

To create the best environment for your loved one, your home will likely need to be updated. Whether you live in a single-story condo in Sacramento, CA, or a two-story home in Pittsburgh, PA, this guide covers some important adjustments to consider making when you’re preparing your home for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Remember that every home and instance of Alzheimer’s disease is different, and needs will vary from family to family. Always consult your doctor about your loved one’s specific needs and challenges.

Take additional safety measures for the oven and stove

Angela V. McKnight, Founder and CEO of AngelaCARES, a community organization for senior citizens and their caregivers, and a mentor for educating the youth in Jersey City, NJ, recommends installing an automatic shut-off switch on the stove. Find a model that switches the stove off when left unattended. It’s common for a loved one to turn on the oven or stove and never return to check on it.
